Materials
- New window pane cut to size
- Glazing compound
- Glazier’s points
- Putty knife
- Caulk
Instructions
- Remove the damaged pane: Wear gloves and safety glasses. Use a utility knife to cut around the perimeter of the damaged pane, ensuring the blade does not score the frame. Remove the old window pane by gently prying it loose with a putty knife.
- Clean the frame: Remove any remaining pieces of glass or old glazing compound from the window frame using a putty knife. Wipe down the frame with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris.
- Apply glazing compound: Apply a bead of glazing compound around the perimeter of the window frame where the new pane will rest. Use a putty knife to smooth the compound.
- Set the new pane: Carefully place the new window pane into the frame and press gently to ensure it is securely seated in the glazing compound.
- Secure the pane: Drive glazier’s points into the frame around the perimeter of the pane to hold it in place. Use a hammer or a glazier’s point driver.
- Apply caulk: Apply a small bead of caulk around the perimeter of the pane where it meets the frame to seal any gaps and prevent water infiltration.
